My Community
In my community education, healthcare, and social justice come in limited supply. Even with the public education system students don’t seem to be receiving enough information regarding higher learning. The committees within CPO are doing a great job with meeting most of these needs, by providing more than just support but service in many different areas such as healthcare, education, and social justice. In my community most people don’t visit the doctor’s office as much as they should. This is because of the fact that so many people can’t afford healthcare so they remain uninsured. What the committees within CPO do to help this particular issue is have health fairs, free to the public. Within these communities there are schools filled with bright and intelligent unmotivated kids. Kids who don’t look forward to higher learning because of the low expectations set forth by their parents and teachers. What the committees within CPO do help resolve this issue is foster a child growth through mentoring, tutoring and friendship. Motivating them and giving them the access to information that they need in order to move into a higher learning institution. Within our social justice caucus, students work with AB540 high school students, and let them know that regardless of their situation there are still resources that will help and allow them to get through college. Overall the committees within CPO work really hard better the lives of the people in my community.

I think is great that we know what goes on in CPO! Nevertheless, I like to repeat what Eder mention in one of our staff meetings when he warned us to not only pay attention to what occurs in UCLA, but also be aware of what is happening in our communities and in the world. I true many communities do not go to the doctor because of the lack of resources and information. I believe we as CPO interns/project directors/active volunteers with the CPO and CPOSA projects should be up to date with the health fairs the health projects offer as well as the workshops and events hosted by the education and social justice groups. If we are inform we can let others that come into the office about upcoming events and even better is to communicate the resources that the groups are offering to our communities. Let them know of a FREE health clinic, when, where and at what time they will be there so they can take their families and spread the word to their friends. I am hopeful the information will spread and that in turn will benefit many communities.
ReplyDeleteThis has to do with education. The problem is most people are not educated about health care and social justice. They don't know what opportunities are out there. Sometimes people get so caught up in their own bubble where there are no resources that they think the resources don't exist. It is our job to bring them the resources or at least inform them that the resources exist. I think CO projects strive to do this and if we continue our work we can reach more and more communities that don't know what opportunities are out there.
ReplyDeleteHonestly I could say that I was one of those people who were ignorant to the opportunities and resources available to us as students. Cpo has taught me that you can find a world of help, all you have to do is ask. I feel that many people in today's world are too afraid to go looking for help. I know some people lake to blame laziness as a reason why so many people don't pursue a higher education, but I think the issue runs so much deeper than that. Low expectations from society, lack of education, little resources; these can all play a factor in determining a personal future. I think the cpo does its best to reach out to as many people as they can, and hopefully in the future we can see more people seeking out our help too.

I most definitely agree with kent. The core issue is education. People are unaware of the possibilities, but more so, they are unaware of their capabilities. I think a valuable aspect of the CPO is that it not only provides some of the necessary resources, but it also helps people within these communities that lack resources, to help themselves. the work that a lot of the projects within the CPO help to empower the members (more so the youth) of the communities. This empowerment ensures that even when there is no longer a CPO, the members of the underrepresented communities arent constantly dependent on outside help. Instead, they can begin looking within their community for help to develop as educated people that are able to access the resources available to them.
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree with Lauren. Lots of people, including myself, are lazy to ask help or get more information, because they don't expect much from others. For instance, sometimes i had problems with writing. However, instead of attending writing workshops at UCLA, i tried to figure out by myself because i doubted their quality. As for education, some people drop college or even choose not to attend college at all because they don't believe further education can make their lives better. So, other than reaching out more students, cpo should also get trust from students.
ReplyDeleteIt's a good thing that people at the CPO are trying to educate students in the surrounding communities to expect more from themselves and from what they can achieve. If the students grow up believing that they amount to nothing, then they start behaving like that since it's what they've been told. CPO groups show them that there are resources to get a better life, and that they can do bigger things with their lives.
